Cantores

About us…

 Cantores is a Philadelphia, PA area vocal ensemble performing primarily a cappella choral music from the 15th through 21st Centuries. The ensemble was formed in 2002 under the leadership of Peter Sipple. Carol Grey took over as director in 2009, after sharing the leadership role for three years.

We are a group of friends and colleagues who love to sing – choral musicians all.  We are committed to excellence through choral performance.  Our members have years of choral singing experience and are familiar with singing in various languages as well as in English. We meet in the homes of some of our members or in church choir rooms, making about equal amounts of music and fun.

Our repertoire is drawn from madrigals, anthems, motets, love songs, folk songs, spirituals, octavos, jazz arrangements and some popular music in settings for two to eight voice parts.  We prepare one or two programs a year and give most of our concerts in area retirement communities.

Sample programs have included:

  • Singin’ in the Spirit, sacred and secular works from Renaissance madrigals and motets to 20th century octavos;
  • A Musical Journey from Morning ’til Night with music by Johannes Brahms, Gerald Finzi, Arthur Sullivan, Benjamin Britten, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Antonín Dvořák, Paul Hindemith, Dan Gawthrop, Ysaye Barnwell, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Leonard Bernstein, plus folksongs, madrigals, and other pieces;
  •  I Sowed the Seeds of Love, a program of folksongs and spirituals;
  • Music that’s truly for the Birds;
  • Spring, Swing, Sing;
  • Heart & Soul: Songs Sacred, Sentimental, and Silly;
  • Comings and Goings;
  • A Grand Night for Singing;
  • Music of the Four Seasons; and
  • A Celebration of Love, madrigals to vocal jazz.
